Julia Colletes (she/they/he) is a multidisciplinary artist working in New York. The Blue Book is a work in progress started at the end of 2020 which deals with issues of escapism, suicidal ideation, and alienation from the body. Enveloped in a hand-stitched cover and tied closed with a bow, the book slowly unravels into an almost 14-foot-long panoramic containing a poem and mixture of images and items. This piece calls to a variety of traditions, from Romantic landscapes to Japanese Boro, which are juxtaposed with experimental processes such as running fabric through laserjet printers, creating a dialogue between past and present, blurring the line between the hand-crafted and the mass-produced. Tactility is important in The Blue Book, not only in its creation and concept but also in its consumption, as it is truly meant to be a physical book—an intimate object to be touched, handled, and passed along.
